Play a game of golf

catalina island golfingFor those who wish to play a game of golf, the history of the golf on Catalina Island goes back to the island’s founding as a resort after its purchase by the Banning brothers. The Catalina Island Golf Course was created in 1892, and is an important part of the charm of the island. Originally designed with only three holes, the course was expanded to nine holes early in the last century.

By 1929, Catalina Island’s golf course was a full 18 hole tournament-worthy facility, although lack of maintenance during WWII reduced it to nine holes again by 1945, where it has remained to this day. Five Par 4 and four Par 3 holes are set on a long, narrow course leading through a canyon, with small greens and deep bunkers. Two tees are provided to those who wish to play a full 18 holes.

Catalina Island Golf Course holds an annual junior golf tournament, and is proud that one of its junior players was Tiger Woods, who played the course at age four and then again at 14. Another well-known golf facility on the island is Golf Gardens, one of the most challenging 18-hole miniature golf courses in the world. banner

To play a game of golf in miniature on a beautifully laid out little course with few ‘gimmicks’, set amongst shady trees overhanging the holes, Golf Garden is the place for golfers young and old. Golf packages are a popular option with visitors, with details easily found on visitcatalinaisland.org. Packages include a round trip by ferry from the mainland and hotel accommodation either right on the beach or in the centre of Avalon.

One of the glories of golf here on Catalina is the scenery surrounding the greens. Backed by densely-forested hills and overlooking the pretty town of Avalon and the brilliant blue of the ocean, golfers can relax and enjoy their game in the loveliest of settings.
