Things to do
For visitors to Catalina, there’s a great choice of things to do. Of course, lazing and lounging on the beach is a priority, but for those into boating and water sports, the island is close to heaven. The warm, intensely blue waters of the Pacific invite visitors to dive into their depths at Lovers’ Cove and casino Point to explore shipwrecks and colourful reefs. Snorkelling or kayaking around the tiny rocky coves are other popular activities.
Drier and more relaxed ways to explore the undersea wonders of Catalina are by a mini-submarine day or night tour or by taking a glass-bottomed boat trip. The waters here are so clear as to be almost transparent, with black rays, octopus, giant sea bass and sharks all easily spotted. Another favourite occupation is surfing, with Shark Harbour and Ben Weston beach the best locations.
Catalina Island is famous for its festivals and events, with several happenings in every month of the year. Some are centred on outdoor activities, others on art and culture and the nine-night jazz festival is a highlight. For the truly energetic,
an annual marathon is run over a 26.2 mile course between Avalon and Two Harbors and many of the events benefit local conservation charities. A list of events and their dates can be found on visitcatalinaisland.org.
Hiking is the best way to explore the natural wonders of the island and its diverse flora and fauna. A permit is required as conservation is taken very seriously here, but is easily obtained on the day. Catalina has miles of back roads and trails crossing its rocky interior and winding along its coastline. Other things to do include sailing, taking boat trips and golfing.
For visitors keen to explore the rest of the island the comfortable way, discovery tours are provided or taxis can be hired, as golf cart transportation isn’t allowed outside Avalon. Bikes are also available for hire, although the hilly interior may be tough for those who don’t cycle regularly. Catalina’s dedicated website, visitcatalinaisland.org, is a great place to check out the diverse activities on this glorious island.
